Overview
Note: All volunteers must complete an application form and a permission form for Cristo Rey Jesuit to conduct a background check for the safety of our students. Volunteers also must participate in STAND Training so that the school community can create and maintain a safe environment for our students.
Cristo Rey Jesuit seeks volunteers to assist in the following areas:
Academic Support (Our Highest Priority Need)
Faculty need volunteers to provide academic support to students in the following subject: English. Volunteer tutors should be able to assist students in several subjects, as students may need generalized help with homework or tutoring in a specific discipline. Tutors must learn and follow teachers’ expectations. Approximately 30 volunteers are needed every day. See tutoring guidelines for more information.
Hours: From 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. (M, T, Th, F). Volunteers can commit to one or more days per week. Depending on the availability of tutors, a student may benefit from additional academic support on Saturdays or Sundays at a local library near the student’s residence. All tutoring is arranged through the school.
Academic Teaching Assistants
Faculty need volunteers to support classroom instruction by providing assistance in any of the following ways:
- Working with small groups of students in the hall or library
- Distributing handouts and checking in papers
- Taking attendance and writing hall passes
- Grading multiple choice tests/quizzes
- Helping prepare materials for a lesson
- Teaching a lesson from time to time
- Supervising while students take a test
- Making notes on student participation/progress for a teacher
- Brainstorming lesson plan ideas with a teacher
Subjects taught this year are: English, algebra, physical science, world history, business technology, and theology/life skills.
Hours: Times can vary but are confined to 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. daily (M-F). Volunteers can commit to one or more days per week.
Writing Tutoring
Volunteers are needed for a writing tutoring program on Wednesday mornings to teach one to two students. The ideal background for this opportunity is teaching experience in English. The minimum background is junior standing in college and writing experience and expertise. Tutors would be working with 1-2 students for at least 1-2 hours every week.
Hours: W 8:55-11:35 a.m., 1:45-3:30 p.m.
Th 8:55-10:40 a.m., 1:45-3:30 p.m.
F 8:55-9:45 a.m., 10:45 a.m-1:40 p.m., 1:45-3:30 p.m.
Athletic Assistance
In the fall, the girls’ and boys’ soccer programs need assistant coaches and managers. In the winter, volunteers are needed to serve as assistant coaches and managers for boys’ basketball and girls’ indoor soccer. In the spring, volunteers are needed to serve as assistant coaches and managers for girls’ softball and boys’ baseball.
Hours: 3:45-5:45 p.m. variable days of the week.
Throughout the school year, assistance is needed in Physical Education any time during the school day.
Hours: 8 a.m.–3:30 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Club and Activity Assistance or Sponsorship
Volunteers are needed to help sponsor and supervise a club or activity for at least one day per week. Such activities could include music, art, drama, yearbook and chess.
Hours: 3:45-4:30 p.m. (M, T, Th, F)
Administrative and Clerical Support
Volunteers are needed to provide administrative work various offices, such as the President’s Office, the Communications Office, the Development Office, and Admissions Office. Help is needed with a host of tasks, including mailings, filing, typing, data entry, preparation for open house, and preparation for development events. Spanish-language skills are helpful, but not necessary.
Hours: Any time from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. daily.
Corporate Internship Program Volunteers
Volunteers with corporate experience are needed to recruit businesses in the Baltimore metropolitan area to hire Cristo Rey Jesuit students, provide advice for our Corporate Internship Program and assist in evaluating the Corporate Internship Program. The time commitment is dependent on the amount of time the volunteer is willing to give for presentations and recruiting activities.
Requested qualities:
- Strong presentation skills
- Understanding of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School’s mission
- Willingness to attend networking events
- Current relationships with corporate leaders
- Knowledge of Baltimore
Event Assistance
Volunteers are needed for specific events to set up for the event, greet guests, and put away
chairs, etc.
Hours: Will vary depending on the event.
Extended Day
Volunteers are needed to supervise students who are waiting to be picked up from school by parents or guardians.
Hours: 3:45-5:45 p.m. on days when coverage by full-time staff is unavailable
How to Apply
Any Cristo Rey Jesuit High School parent or guardian interested in serving as a chaperone for
school field trips should complete the field trip chaperone form.
Volunteers from the community are required to complete the following volunteer application form.
Please return the form to David Haddad, volunteer coordinator. After the form is submitted, an
on-line background check will be conducted. If the applicant passes the background check, the applicant is notified and must attend a training session for adults working with children.
All volunteers (parent volunteers and community volunteers) must successfully complete a criminal background check and attend a mandatory STAND training before they may volunteer at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School.
