COMEDY FUNDRAISER NETS SIX-FIGURES TO PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY IN BALTIMORE CITY

Baltimore, MD, April 2, 2019
– On the evening of March 29, 2019, more than 360 business leaders, philanthropists, and Baltimore-area professionals gathered at the American Visionary Art Museum for a comedy show. Though the mood was lively and fun, the purpose behind the event, called Stand Up for Students, was serious.
Headline sponsor Dragone Realty Investments, along with advocate sponsor Chesapeake Urology & the Jane and Sanford Siegel Family Scholarship Fund, plus additional corporate and individual sponsors (listed below) were there to raise critical funds for students at local high school, Cristo Rey Jesuit. One-hundred percent of Cristo Rey’s students are from Baltimore City families who would not otherwise be able to afford a private, college-preparatory education. This event annually fills a critical gap in the school’s budget.

By the end of the evening on Friday, guests and sponsors had raised a net total of $185,000 – a record for the event. An impressive $52,000 was raised in outright donations alone, when guests stepped forward to offer gifts to cover scholarships, job-training, college trips, and other essentials to the young people at Cristo Rey.

Four seniors at the high school – Alex, Jerry, Jonathan, and Shamira – opened the event by sharing stories about grit and persistence. Every student in their graduating class has been accepted into college.

Bob Ihle also stood onstage alongside his wife, Kara, and Rich and Nichole Taylor to share why they decided to serve as Stand Up for Students event chairs. He said, “we’re here because we believe deeply in the Cristo Rey model…it’s an innovative solution.”

Local comedians Ty Davis and Jason Weems performed live comedy sets to close out the event.
