Baltimore, Md., June 13, 2019 - Dr. Renato DeSantis has retired three times, but his departure from Cristo Rey Jesuit High School (CRJ) carries a special significance for the school’s teachers and students. During today’s Baccalaureate ceremony, a graduating senior will receive a community service award for their efforts to give back. The award will carry a new and meaningful title: The Dr. Rudy DeSantis Community Service Achievement Award.

This named award commemorates DeSantis’ incredible decade of service to the teachers and students at CRJ. After retiring from his successful Baltimore dental practice, DeSantis, known fondly as Dr. Rudy, took up volunteering. In 2009, he learned about CRJ -- which was, at that time, a new, East-Baltimore school -- and offered to help.

Since then, Dr. Rudy has arrived each morning to work as a teaching assistant, often taking his post at the back of a freshman biology classroom to grade papers, prepare labs, and work with students who need a little extra tutoring. His own early education in parochial schools had a profound impact on him, and he wanted to be a part of an institution guided by Jesuit values.

One such Jesuit value is the “Magis”, or doing more for the greater glory of God, and therefore, for others. In his tenure at CRJ, Dr. Rudy has not only volunteered, but also invested personally in the scholarship program alongside his wife, Joan DeSantis, and family. In 2014, the DeSantises endowed the DeSantis Family Scholarship to benefit graduates of CRJ pursuing their continued Jesuit education at Loyola University Maryland.

Director of Mission and Ministry Christine Gallagher shared, “Dr. Rudy embodies what we hope all of our students mature into - a person for others. His commitment to CRJ, care for our entire community of students and adults, and strong faith have been a model of love in action for all of us. He never wants any recognition for the piles of papers he’s worked through with hundreds of students, but we know that this award will ensure that generations to come will work hard in our Baltimore communities because of his example as a servant leader.”
