Baltimore, M.d., November 25, 2019 - Many community-service projects last for one day, but in March of this year, six volunteers made a much longer commitment to Cristo Rey Jesuit High School (CRJ). Mike Afolabi, Team Supervisor at Civic Works, Candace Etzler, Key Manager at BG&E, Lindsey Ferro, Lead Manager of Marketing Activation at T. Rowe Price, Colleen Helak, Guest Experience Manager at the Baltimore Ravens, Brian Klein, Assistant Director of Admissions at The Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School, and Liz Milligan, Senior Associate with SC&H Group,  committed nine months to the school for an intensive and immersive experience.

These six professionals  came to CRJ as a part of GIVE, a nine month fellowship organized by Business Volunteers Maryland. GIVE “prepares rising leaders in Baltimore for civic engagement and community leadership,” according to the program website.

The GIVE Fellows hosted listening sessions with teachers, staff, and students and decided to leverage their expertise in a diverse range of industries to create a supervisor toolkit that would be used to support CRJ students in their internships across the Baltimore region. They worked closely with Michelle Mallen, Senior Relationship Manager for the Corporate Internship Program at CRJ. She shared that if it were not for the GIVE Fellows, the toolkit might not have ever come to fruition.

“The supervisor toolkit was a project I have been working on since I began three years ago and just never had the time to devote to it that I wanted and needed to,” shared Mallen. GIVE Fellows supported Mallen by working on each chapter of the toolkit, preparing activities and worksheets for students to use on the job.

The Toolkit explores nine different topics ranging from time and task management to professional social media presence to career pathways; the resource was shared with every supervisor who attended CRJ’s Corporate Internship Program Supervisor Orientation.

On November 8, Afolabi, Etzler, Ferro, Helak, Klein, and Milligan celebrated their graduation from the GIVE Fellowship. “The volunteers really wanted to make sure that their work supported the vision that we shared with them...they made a huge impact,” concluded Mallen.
